Four kids: add by age band

Four under-8s: 4 × 1.7 L = 6.8 L. Mixed (6, 9, 12, 15): 1.7 + 2.1 + 2.4 + 2.3 = 8.5 L. All teens (15, 15, 17, 17) with two boys: 2.3 + 2.3 + 3.3 + 3.3 = 11.2 L. Recalculate on each child's birthday that crosses 4, 9, or 14.

Do we really need 15 L of water a day as a family?

Total water, yes — but drunk water is closer to 11 L. The other 4 L comes from food moisture, which in a family of six cooking at home is significant (rice, pasta, soup, fruit, yoghurt, vegetables all count). What you're actually buying or filtering is about 11 L, which across six people is 1.8 L each average. With one teen boy needing 2.5–3 L and a 5-year-old needing 1.2 L, it balances reasonably.
